Venice: Food

Writer: Donny Marco BarnesDonny Marco Barnes

When you think about Italy the food definitely comes to mind. But it's not just pizza and pasta. Venetian cuisine is a whole different thing to the stereotypical food of Italy. Yes you do come across multiple pizza places when walking through the little streets on the outskirts of St Mark's Square but Venetian cuisine is very different. It keeps a traditional Italian feel while being inspired and sculpted by food from across the globe.

The October Venice trip was my first trip to Italy so I’d had never had Italian food from the country of origin but I did feel even before stepping onto the plane, that the food in Venice would be different somehow because it wasn’t like every other city in Italy. Every single night I was there I ate from the restaurant at my hotel called Sagra. Looking back I do regret this because there are so many other wonderful places that could have served up some delicious dishes but I wasn’t there for long and didn’t have much time to really think about where I would like to eat so I played it safe and stuck to the hotel. But I was more than impressed. For starter every night I ate fritto misto which was so yummy! This Italian dish is a mix of seafood deep fried in batter. I have tried multiple variations of fritto misto across the globe but the one I ate in Venice surpasses all of these. For main course I ate a variety of dishes which included pasta and sea bass but the starter was the highlight. For dessert I often ate tiramisu which was really delicious.

When we went to the concierge they recommended a place for lunch where we could try traditional Venetian food called cicchetti which is a type of snack or side dish commonly eaten in Venice. When we got there me and my friend ordered one of the cicchetti and one margarita pizza and we shared. The cicchetti was really good and if you're in Venice I would advise ordering this if it's on the menu.

We also went to a nice little cafe which we found in a square after walking halfway to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. Sadly I don’t remember the name of it but we ate some delicious cakes and we came back for lunch later on which was really nice.

Okay that's it for now. Hope you enjoyed it and don’t forget to subscribe for the other Venice posts. Ciao for now!
