How To Handle Hanauma Bay- 6 Tips for an Eco-Friendly Visit

Writer: Donny Marco BarnesDonny Marco Barnes

Hanauma Bay is a beautiful snorkeling beach on the southeast coast of Oahu. I have visited Hanauma Bay a few times and although it is a lovely beach it does have its bad points. Here are my top tips for getting the best Eco-friendly experience out of a trip to this beach.

1. Get there early: I know your on holiday but putting in the extra effort to set your alarm and push of that duvet will improve your experience and make it easier to enjoy the park. It opens at 6am all year round and it tends to get very busy from 7:00-8:00 so getting their early is a must.

2. Bring your own snorkeling gear: It costs $20 to rent a set of snorkeling gear and honestly you don't want to be carrying to much cash around because a busy beach is the perfect place for pick pockets.

3. Don't stay there the whole day. Hanauma Bay gets really busy so once you've had your share of the snorkeling fun let other people enjoy it too. Also the marine life is being damaged so if more people spend less time there the outcome will be better for everyone involved. Plus there are plenty of other sites and hidden gems to see across the island don't waste a whole day on one activity.

4. Pay attention to the the video shown: The video is not just to delay the procession of tourists onto the beach it will actually contain a lot of valuable information about how to make sure you are being as considerate as you can towards the marine life.

5. Pick up litter!: A pretty basic regulation everyone should follow but recently Hanauma bay has become very, very dirty and to help you get the best experience and protect the wildlife picking up rubbish is essential.

6. Don't listen to everything you hear: Many reviewers nowadays on sites like TripAdvisor complain about the rubbish on the beach, the destroyed coral and the crowded car parks but think to yourself. All these things they complain about are caused by other humans just like them. They may complain about the rubbish but perhaps they dropped a wrapper from their ice cream. Maybe they rant about the destroyed coral but who knows they may have stood on the coral themselves. Don't fully trust everything you read. Go to these places and discover them for yourself.

Thanks so much for reading everyone. I hope these tips helped you and gave you some ideas of how to make your trip more fun and Eco-friendly. Don't forget to subscribe and bye for now!
