Venice: A City On Water

I decided to do an entirely different post for water transport to do with Venice because it's such a huge topic. So let's get started!

Venetian Grand Canal

Venice is a city on water. The Venetian Lagoon is a series of islands with canals twisting and turning around everywhere. In a big city like London or San Francisco you drive all the time.. But in Venice your boat is your car. This is one of the reasons why Venice is so unique. It's like no other city in the world. My first experience of the boats was when we hopped onto a speedboat to travel to our hotel. Thrilling is the only word to describe it. We went zooming across the water like lightning and arrived at our hotel in no time. At the hotel there is a water taxi service which isn’t as fast as the speedboat however it was really fun just jumping onto a boat and going across the to main area of Venice every morning. The hotel also arranged transport for our trip to Murano where we went really fast and it was quite bumpy.

Now onto the typical Venice topic: Gondolas. On our trip we decided to take two gondola rides in two completely different areas of Venice which gave us more rounded idea on what the city was like. It cost about 80€ per 40 minutes which was quite expensive but worth it to see all the secret little alley ways and canals in Venice. So even though it's a typical tourist thing always go on a gondola ride you won’t regret it.

St Marks Square, Gondolas

Just to add a quick note, be aware of the fact that Venice being a city on water can flood. Locally known as acqua alta which means high water, flooding is more common during the winter months so please when traveling during these months be careful. This shouldn’t put you of visiting Venice but it's just a caution.

Okay that's it for this post. If you have any more questions about the water transport in Venice please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks for reading. Arrivederci!
